Storied Yarns - A Yarn Quest Knitting RPG

Created by Tania C Richter

Yarn Quest needs you! Grab your knitting needles and join your fellow Yarn Questers in the quest to save Yarnia! What is Yarn Quest? Yarn Quest is one part knitting pattern, one part Role-Playing Game, and one part Choose Your Own Adventure. Each quest is a knitting pattern, and as the player leads their character through the quest they come across enemies to battle, choices to make, and items that all influence the patterns knitted on the project. That's what makes Yarn Quest so special - almost every project is unique. Storied Yarns is an introduction to Yarn Questing for those who have never played an RPG, and provides new patterns and play styles for those who have partaken in previous campaigns. The book will be a full color hardcover including tutorials, lore, patterns, and lots of artwork. There will be tutorials for how to play, along with tutorials for how to use the double knitting technique. Don't like double knitting? Can't knit, but like to crochet? There are plenty of methods to join in the fun! Questers have done previous projects in colorwork knitting and Tunisian crochet. There's no limit to what you can do!

Latest Updates from Our Project:

July Update - New Timeline and other details
almost 5 years ago – Sat, Jul 13, 2019 at 01:52:16 AM

Hi all!

First and foremost - Backerkit will close and charge on July 31st. No more preorders will be accepted after that.  All cards will be charged at that time. (if you did paypal you've already been charged and will not be double charged) Shipping details are not yet closed, I will be doing an update on that closer to shipping time.

Okay, now onto the news. I will hopefully not need surgery! It's still a possibility, but hand therapy has been getting me further than we expected. The downside is that I'm still on very light duty. Like, 15 minutes of knitting a day light duty. But, it's progress. I have 2 months until I'm re-evaluated, then we take it from there.

My tablet is off getting a new screen installed so that it actually turns on again, which is useful for making art. As soon as I get it back I'll be diving into getting the cover art done along with some more interior art. The next update I post will be when I get it back (which will hopefully be end of next week, but definitely before the end of the month.

NEW AND HOPEFULLY FINAL TIMELINE

  • Mugs - In progress
  • Bags - In progress
  • Tablet - In repair (hurray for spontaneously combusting LCD screens!)
  • Book - In progress
  • Nerve - In repair
  • Books out for order - end of October
  • Shipping - November/December

Keep in mind that yes, this can change, and I really hope it doesn't.

Hope you're all having an excellent summer!

Convergence approaches! And a tech issue... because why not?
almost 5 years ago – Wed, Jun 19, 2019 at 10:29:07 PM

Hey all!

Short update tonight. This is the last one you'll likely see until after CONvergence (July 4-7th) as I'll be attending and participating as a Sub-Head of Art Show for the first time, so the rest of the month will be getting all my ducks in a row for the art show.

I have some unfortunate news. Last week my tablet started misbehaving, and I blamed it on a Windows 10 update as I've had many of those screw up my systems. Well, yesterday my tablet decided not to turn on at all. I spent a few hours over the last couple days trying to get it turned on at least turned on so I can try to work with the system, and at this point I've thrown in the towel and contacted the company to get a replacement. I pushed that I really need a replacement ASAP, but I have no idea when I'll actually get a new one. Hopefully it will only take a week or two.

Also, reminder that the nerve test is in two weeks, and the updated timeline will hopefully come in the second week of July (I have a follow up appointment then that I should be able to use to plot out dates for surgery and recovery, assuming that's the route they send me).

Thank you all for your patience, and I'll try to have some better news for the next update. If you attend CONvergence, be sure to stop by the art show and say hi!

Cover Art Update
almost 5 years ago – Wed, Jun 05, 2019 at 10:48:16 PM

Hey all! Not much to update. The cover art is coming along, a good part of the dragon is done and all that's left on it is the hind legs and tail, which are far easier than the head and wings! After that I'm going to start on the background. The pile of yarn balls is going to be by far the hardest part. I'm going to try a few tricks to make it easier so I don't have to draw them all individually!

Here's a quick little step by step on how I did the wing art. (yes, it's taking me a bit more time than I'd initially thought. Feathers and scales are my favorite and least favorite things to draw). Also, there are going to be a fair amount of adjustments after the dragon gets colored and all the other elements are placed, so this isn't finalized yet!

Okay, a few other housekeeping things. First off, those of you wondering about shipping - don't worry, we've still got time! I'll have a tutorial on how to change your shipping address before we get to fulfillment. I'll be putting that up in a future update. You can also directly send me your shipping address through Kickstarter and I'll save it in case there are issues updating.

Second, quick reminder that CONvergence is approaching, so I won't be online much the last week of June/first week of July. That is also when I have my EMG for my nerve issue, so sometime during the second week of July I'm going to have a new timeline to send out. Fingers crossed that we figure out what's going on.

I hope you're all having an excellent summer!

Late April/Early May update
almost 5 years ago – Fri, May 17, 2019 at 10:50:01 PM

Good evening, backers!

Apologies for not putting up an update in April, I ended up catching the flu and was out for a while. I'm finally back on my feet, and back from my PT appointment with some news... And unfortunately, it's not great. Back in March I alluded to some new health issues. I fell hard on my left elbow, which got misdiagnosed as a bone bruise. Turns out it's a full blown damaged ulnar nerve (Cubital Tunnel Syndrome) that I can't knit. Again. And I can't get in to get the EMG appointment to determine if I need surgery until July 2nd.

Yup.

HOWEVER - There is some good news. I can still draw! Which of course means I decided to completely redo the cover art. I'll post some screenshots of the progress on that at the end of the update. Here's the current progress report on where we're at with the KS stuff.

Progress report -

  • Pins - Safe from flooding
  • Dice - Mostly safe from flooding, a few need cleaned
  • Bags - Ordered, in progress
  • Mugs - Ordered, in progress
  • Books - finishing up layout/personal edits, first chunk off to tech editor starting next week
  • Knitted Samples - many sent off to test knitters, probably more with the nerve issue. There are a few I really need to try and finish myself, going to hope the nerve behaves itself sooner than later.

Also - Just to clear things up, any new releases for my Ravelry store have been done for a while or are on a deadline with a other companies that I'm working with.

Finally, yes, I know that everything seems... a bit ridiculous. I hated posting this update, the last thing that I want to do is have more delays come up. If you have any doubts about the stuff that's happened, I do have all the medical statements and I'm willing to share them. I promise that I'm not ditching you all. Life has just gone a bit sideways this last year.

I'll leave you all with some progress pics of the new cover art~ Next update will be at the end of the month, and will hopefully include the finished (or very close to finished) cover art.

A Series of Unfortunate Events
about 5 years ago – Sun, Mar 24, 2019 at 05:03:55 PM

Good Afternoon, everyone!

I'm sorry that this update doesn't have much new, the last few months have gone... well, not great.

A lot of things with our house have gone wrong, along with some new health issues. Long story short, water is a pain in the butt and my balance needs some work.

The good news is that we are still on schedule, I built in a bit of extra time into the timeline so we should still have all rewards in hand by August. It's going to be a bit crunched, but we will get there.

I do have a preview of a new pattern I'm working on as an addition to the book as thanks for your patience with this project. Here's Battle Mode -

Bonus points for guessing where the idea came from ;)

I hope you're all having a good and slightly less wet spring than we are.
